The real difference between Balblair and other malts is that rather than age a malt to a specific year the manager instead tastes straight from the cask each year. Whenever the malt reaches perfection a vintage is born. Balblair is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, Balblair was founded in 1790 by John Ross. The distillery lies in Edderton in the Northern Highlands, surrounded by rugged mountains, from whence the Allt Dearg – Balblair’s water source – springs.
Balblair 1989 Second Release was distilled in 1989 bottled in 2012 this full bodied 23 year old malt is a spectacular demonstration of the skill of the Balblair distillery! Delicate amber in appearance with rose gold highlights. Full bodied malt with sweet aromas of raisin balanced with fresh green apples and slight hints of banana. The American oak, ex bourbon casks used in the maturation lend a warm toffee vanilla fragrance. A rich sweet and slightly spicy palate with raisins and fruits. Stunning smooth finish that lasts!
A bottle will set you back about £120 due to the limited availability of the Second Release. I actually picked this one up for £46 from Cheers In Limavady, The story is simply the guy had the same Price labeled for the 2001 and the 1989. I told him that it was at least £50 too low, returning the next day to find it still priced at $£46 I grabbed it quickly! If it’s a little too out there you can get the Third Release from £78- £86 which is a 23 year old. Its an overall stunning and award winning malt thats a dream to enjoy.
