It has been twelve years since Sam Raimi first brought “Spider-Man” to the big screen and after the release of “Spider-Man 3” which was much too overstuffed with inadequate villains for my liking, the franchise fell into a rut. So the big question that Marc Webb had to answer was where to go with “The Amazing Spiderman”? With any reboot there will be familiarities in the story as there are certain points that must be ticked off. It is the newly conceived adventure which attempts to broaden the mythology by focusing more on the characters and the untold story of Spider-Man, his family linage and the relationship with Oscorp. It is the forward thinking, the seeds planted, the promise for a superb series to follow that allows “ The Amazing Spider-Man” to stand above its predecessors. It is much more slick and subtle in its execution, much more grown up and more amazing … there I said it.
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is the orphaned teenager living with his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field), but Peter is not the goofy, super-nerd that he used to be, he is a lot tougher and angst-ridden. Still bullied in school but is no push over Peter is shy, bright and has an awkward crush on Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) daughter of police Captain Stacy (Denis Leary). Following a clue to his parents disappearance Peter is lead to Oscorp Tower to talk with Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) his fathers old partner. Sneaking off to explore the lab he is bitten by a genetically modified spider which gives him super human strength and spider like abilities! On a collision course with his destiny after the death of his Uncle Ben, peter is sent into a revenge filled fury to hunt down his uncles murder. Meanwhile Dr. Connors who trying to use gene splicing serum to re-grow his arm turns himself into his villainous alter ego, The Lizard. The city in peril Peter must put on the blue and red spandex to save those who brand him a vigilantly.
Why did i choose this movie, because the sequel is out and i wanted a refresher, and because its amazing, there i said it again. The reboot is a darker affair, but not all “Nolany” and the action sequences are brilliant. The casting is spot on and the chemistry between all of them is flawless. Some may say it was too soon for a reboot but they ate their words pretty quickly and now with the second movie in full swing and the announcement of a third and fourth installment “The Amazing Spiderman” series is going to be amazing, there i said it a third time!
