Laugh all you want but this isn’t some made up-country name like Freedonia or Sodor. The Federated States of Micronesia are a real and present nation-state located in the pacific. 607 islands account for a total land mass of just 702 km2 (271 sq mi) however, the distance from east to west is some 2,900 km (1,802 mi). I’m sure like me you now feel a sense of foreboding about what exactly this tiny country (pop: 106,104) needs with all that space?
Micronesia also claims to have no standing army this has been the case since attaining independence from the United States of America in 1986. The islands rely solely on an agreement with the US to maintain its defence – it claims. You’d think if you didn’t have an army to defend yourselves you’d keep that to yourself – put up a front – maybe stick a dummy burglar alarm on the side of your house.
They’re up to something these Micronesians.
Anyone who has watched any classic James Bond films will know that isolated islands in the middle of nowhere are like honey to would-be criminal masterminds bent on world domination.
